Tempering the Mundaneum

A repository for the lost narratives of musical history, this public-facing archive resists the reclusive nature of the City of Westminster and offers new insights into the handling of musical artefacts.

In an age where music can be so quickly disseminated, classical music has become buried beneath the easily digestible current parallel. The proposed building aims to confront the decline of classical music as a public art form while injecting creative practice into the area. Accommodating a controlled repository for the lost narratives of musical history, the cultural centre provides a facility for research and exhibition spaces that will act as a counterweight to the orderly nature of the borough. The research facility houses three archives: audio-visual, instruments, and manuscripts. The relationship between the private and public spaces is challenged through multiple exposures.
